McClure United Church

McClure United is an Affirming Church!

McClure celebrates that we are an Affirming Ministry of the United Church of Canada. We strive to be an open minded, inclusive, and welcoming community of faith.
It is our hope that no matter a person's sexual orientation, gender identity, ability, economic status, race, or age; that all feel safe and welcome here.  

What does it mean to be "Affirming?" 

 According to the United Church of Canada: "The Affirming Ministries Program is a network of United Church of Canada ministries of all kinds that strive be fully inclusive of people of all sexual orientations and gender identities. And it asks each ministry to take action." (https://www.affirmunited.com/about, 2025).
 
McClure registered as an Affirming Church in 2016, which means it is our responsibility and delight to be an accessible and inclusive space! 

The Five Focus Areas:  


These are the five areas McClure is dedicated to continue focusing on: 

1. 2SLGBTQ+ Support and Allyship - Being an welcoming and inclusive space for members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community. We strive to use inclusive language and have installed Gender Neutral Washrooms. We must practice active allyship in the face of injustices.

2. Anti-Racism and Decolonial Education - We must unlearn harmful beliefs taught by racist systems. We celebrate diversity and welcome people of all cultures. 

3. Reconciliation - As a Christian church, we have a duty to own the harm the United Church caused Indigenous peoples by colonization. We strive to appeal to the Truth and Reconciliation (2015) Calls to Action for Faith Communities and continue to educate our congregation on Reconciliation. 

4. Being an accessible place for people with physical disabilities - Our building is wheel chair accessible and we offer multiple accessibility tools, such as large print bulletins and hearing assist devices, during our weekly worship. We want to continue to find new ways to make our building accessible for everyone!

5. Advocacy for Mental Health and Dementia - We want to continue our education around mental health and break down harmful stereotypes. We hope to support people who suffer from mental illness, addictions, and dementia. 



McClure United does not currently have an active Affirming Committee, but welcomes small groups to form around events and social issues as needed. All Affirming responsibilities have been allocated to our Outreach Committee.
